Text Box: Produced for Eseltjiesrus by Mulberry Studio, McGregor
Text Box: Donkey Footcare Workshop run by The Donkey Sanctuary (UK), in conjunction with the Vet Faculty at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:  The worst problems we encounter in rescued donkeys are in hoof care, usually through neglect or ignorance.  Johan was sponsored by the UK Donkey Sanctuary to attend this very worthwhile workshop and he also strengthened our relationship with our colleagues in England – the world leaders in donkey health and care.

Text Box: Hee haw folks!  I’m Adam and I was the first donkey to come to the Sanctuary, on Easter Monday exactly three years ago.  I came from Zoar (near Ladysmith) after a lifetime of hard labour which I prefer not to think about any more.   I was worn out, thin and very tired and felt I had served my time on Earth as a beast of burden.   Imagine my surprise as life just got better and better!   I soon had two good friends living with me at the dam, and recently we moved to join the main herd of 15 other donkeys!   After some negotiation we all found our places in the hierarchy, and I really enjoy getting to know all the others.  Little Spokie who was the newest arrival no longer looks like an X-ray picture and there is always something going on in the group.   Surely this must be Donkey Paradise, and we are all SO grateful to you kind humans who make this possible.
On behalf of all of us:  Thank You from the bottom of our donkey hearts!

Text Box: Rehabilitation   Thanks to action taken by Glynn and Marlene, a donkey was rescued in van Wyksdorp and brought to us for rehabilitation.   Toffee is being treated at Pat Werdmuller’s farm.   He had such grossly neglected hooves that he sat on the post and rail fence to take the weight off his poor painful feet.   By the end of April Toffee will be able to travel to his new home in Franschhoek to join a donkey friend, Apples, who was rescued by the Cart Horse Protection Association.  What a happy future awaits these two sadly abused and neglected creatures!

Fundraising   The Sanctuary is a registered charity and we do all our own fundraising.  The daily running costs are largely covered by our Adopt-a-Donkey scheme.  We sincerely thank all our loyal adopters who contribute, some for much longer than the initial one year period, and one of the highlights of running the Sanctuary is meeting you when you visit your donkeys.  We form a loving and supportive Eseltjiesrus family!   Details on adoption are on the website or available from us.

New Shoes!!!!

Hee Hawww!!!

Text Box: Advisory Board
We are considering establishing an Advisory Board for Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary which will comprise of people who through their positions, experience, talents or qualifications are an important source of direction and support to the Management of Eseltjiesrus and so help build a secure, ongoing organisation.

Initially we are seeking four to seven people to serve on the Advisory Board. We envisage the board meeting twice a year and playing a variety of roles. These could include: Public relations; Funding (through contacts for in-kind resources, and for direct financial support); Accessing land for the sanctuary (through contacts and advice on land purchase/leasing); Education Programming; and giving us fresh perspectives on a variety of other issues.

If you have any ideas about this idea or suggestions of people to serve on the Advisory Board please contact Johan (info@donkeysanctuary.co.za) (Tel: 023 625 1593)

Text Box: Leaving a lasting gift...
Text Box: By making a bequest to Eseltjiesrus  your compassion lives on and the long-term functioning of the Sanctuary is ensured.  There are many options:  leaving a percentage of your estate, or a fixed amount, or the residue after other amounts have been allocated.  You may even consider taking out an insurance policy with the Sanctuary as benefactor.   Please contact us if you need guidance.

Text Box: Administration
Text Box: As we are a registered Public Benefit Organisation we issue tax certificates on request, so that you may deduct the amount of your donations when submitting your tax return to SARS. Please contact us if you require this certificate.

Text Box:   To run the Sanctuary along impeccable lines requires stringent administration and financial controls, and we are very fortunate to have Tony Saddington as our part-time Administrative Manager since November 2009.   He cheerfully makes sure that everything is done correctly and even the annual audit holds no fears for us!  Thank you, Tony!

Text Box: Eseltjiesrus Education Project has been funded for another year by The Donkey Sanctuary in UK, specifically to produce classroom material promoting the care of working donkeys and enhancing the status of donkeys.   A long-term project is to have donkey care and general animal welfare included in the national education syllabus.  Obviously this requires careful planning and negotiation with the authorities. Assistance from anybody with good connections will be most graciously received.
